Traveling as we do, we often have friends, family and followers ask us travel questions on Facebook. Recently, I was asked this question: Q. Do you worry about your glasses being broken or stolen when traveling? What about being able to wear contacts when swimming? Is it either take glasses or be blind and/or not go? I did a trip 3 years ago and could see well enough to swim without anything but now I can't do anything without them. I'm worried about my next trip. I'm thinking of getting cheap frames instead of taking my good ones even though their insured. Should I look into prescription goggles? I'm not excited about that option. Is it okay to swim in contacts?

A. I would definitely consider this an area of expertise. I have a super high prescription, like -10 in contacts, so I feel ya! Its terrifying being blind! I do daily contacts, so if I have an issue, I have some back-ups. I cannot go without one or the other, so I have to take glasses for evenings, and for just-in-case situations. I always take last year's pair of glasses instead of my new ones (they are just a slightly lower script). I also take a tiny eyeglass repair kit. This way, I have multiple options. Plus, if my glasses break or get lost or stolen, I have my regular pair at home.

Also, I have been swimming in my contacts since I was 16. I don't open my eyes under water unless I'm wearing goggles, and I've never had a problem. It is important to clean them well afterwards, or if you have enough disposables, just throw them away.
